   30th April: James the Apostle and brother of St. John the TheologianSt. James, the brother of St. John the Evangelist, was born at Betsaida and was one of the twelve Apostles. He was one of the sons of Zebedy and was also known as the ‘senior’, to be distinguished from James of Alpheus, known as ‘the junior’. St. James and his brother St. John were called the ’Sons of Thunder’ for their profound theology, but also because they were great preachers. Tradition has it that St. James was the first Apostle to be subjected to martrydom, by beheading, around the years 43-44, in accordance with the wish of Herod Agrippa.
